Canyon Rim Overlook Dispersed Camp (Comanche National Grasslands)
The Setup: A stunning rim-edge dispersed campsite located within the Comanche National Grasslands, reached after a long (~30 km) drive in from the main road (CR 109). The site sits on top of a canyon with sweeping valley views.
Amenities:
Small rock fire pit
Pit toilets available at Picketwire Corrals (NW corner of the grasslands area)
The Highlights: Exceptional canyon overlook with wide, uninterrupted views and a very peaceful atmosphere. Strong sense of remoteness despite good road access. Quiet nights and clean surroundings add to the appeal. Nearby trail access includes routes descending into the canyon.
Connectivity: Not specified.
Access Notes:
Access roads are generally well-graded and surprisingly fast in dry conditions (some stretches allow high-speed travel)
Occasional deep tire ruts suggest potential for severe mud after rain
Cattle guards and rough patches require caution
It's very windy and exposed on the rim; temperatures drop at night
Fire ring present but conditions are exposed—use caution with wind and fire restrictions
Excellent site for self-sufficient campers comfortable with open, exposed canyon-top conditions.
